Stefan Rasche, gallerist, Münster, about the work of Reinhard Doubrawa, 2003
Reinhard Doubrawa Explains the World: the title of a series of drawings (begun in 1997) that connect images and words describes the complex explorations of the artist, whose almost demonstrative objecthood opens up multi-faceted relationships to reality. Again and again, Doubrawa uses the inexhaustible treasure of common terms and ideas in order to snatch the emblematic power of selected fragments from the constantly increasing flood of information.
Doubrawa's growing work can be regarded as a long, extensive process of observation and accumulation, an exemplary collection of pictures, or an encyclopedic study by a witness of contemporary events. Exactly as if he were concerned with permanently reassuring himself of what has occurred and existed, Doubrawa has, for instance, drawn a complete issue of the news magazine Der Spiegel, from the first to the last picture, as if he were aiming - in a mixture of obsession and discipline - to become a part of the world's events, its figures and showplaces. |
