Painting a New Concept of the Painting Concept Regarding the Multiples by Andreas Paeslackby Peter Fabian, 2003
Andreas Paeslack deals with the "debit and credit" aspect of the painting concept: What is a painting meant to depict in the future and what is its role in contemporary art? In his view, "the promise of the academy of arts to find answers for important questions by means of paintings" can no longer be held. In his works, the painting in its traditional sense remains blank. Yet, the "iconoclast's" contemplation and action deals almost inevitably with the painting or with the painting concept.
During his university studies (in the painting class of the University of Fine Arts in Dresden), Paeslack would comment on the works of old masters by emphasising their external characteristics (e.g. gold frame), by referring to the spaces within the painting (using "objects to fill the spaces") or to the base materials of the paintings (untreated canvass and theme design of the exhibition walls). |
