I.M.Dietrich / Returns, 2001
Picture card 10.5 x 14.8 cm
(returns from the "M sucht Dietrich" mailing)
Edition of 37 ex., signed
85 Euro

As part of an artist-in residence project at Podewil, Berlin, Irene Andessner involved herself with the myth and the person of Marlene Dietrich. A hundred years after the actress s birth she followed the trail of her feelings and thoughts and so turned herself mentally and visually, through a process lasting months, into the actress - accompanied by newspaper reporters and television cameras, from Wiener Casting via the Cologne transvestite stage to the Berlin Registry Office, where she married a Berliner called Dietrich so that she could be officially "the Dietrich" (until a divorce in 2003).
The edition consists of the replies to the "M sucht Dietrich" [M looks for Dietrich] mailing, in which the artist wrote to possible marriage candidates - all Berlin men with the surname Dietrich - in order, in a casting which followed, to find her groom. There is an "I.M.Dietrich-Zimmer" [I.M.Dietrich Room] in the Hotel Chelsea, Cologne.
